Answer first

The Ranchers controls were simplified in an official update: Right Mouse Button rotates the camera, Left Mouse Button performs all primary tool actions, and building placement with the Hammer now needs only one button. Open the menu with ESC — Game Settings, including the full Camera Settings section, are accessible directly from it. Every default value and its source update is listed below.

Controls quick reference

Official The mappings below come from the official "Next Fest Update – Controls, Camera & QoL Improvements" notes (Feb 2026 update, demo-era) — recheck against the current EA build, because the developers have continued to iterate on controls since the demo.

TOpens the phone, including the quest journalCorroborated by players — the support team's own workaround for stuck quest trackers starts with "press T" (Steam discussion, Aug 4, 2026)

Two solo-play behaviors worth knowing from the same official update: the game pauses in solo mode while you use the Feedback App or Settings App, and there is a Gameplay setting to adjust Phone Call text speed Official (Feb 2026 update, demo-era); recheck against the current EA build.

Official Day rollover is manual. Per the pre-EA Ranching v2 update notes, a new day starts only when you press the "Start new day" button in the end-of-the-day summary — the notes explicitly call this the way to pause the game, and say it works in multiplayer too. Caveat: this is pre-EA official documentation, not yet independently rechecked in the current EA build. If you need a break mid-day, use sleep to reach the summary screen and simply do not press the button until you are ready.

Keyboard layouts: QWERTZ layout support (Germany, Austria, etc.) was added in the same update Official (Feb 2026 update, demo-era); recheck against the current EA build.

Camera settings, one by one

Official A dedicated Camera Settings section was added in the Feb 2026 update (demo-era); recheck against the current EA build. The same update also reduced camera acceleration and deceleration to remove the "snapping" effect, making movement smoother and more predictable. The settings and their official defaults:

SettingOfficial defaultWhat it doesOur suggestion Editorial
Camera Movement SpeedNot statedHow fast the camera turns with your inputStart at default; raise it only if the camera feels like it lags behind your mouse
Camera Zoom SpeedNot statedHow fast zoom respondsLeave at default unless zooming feels jumpy while driving
Automatic Camera Recenter – On FootDisabledWhen enabled, the camera automatically rotates to align with the player's direction, without manual inputKeep it off if you like full manual control; try enabling it if you find yourself constantly dragging the camera while walking
Automatic Camera Recenter – In VehicleEnabledSame auto-alignment while drivingThe default-on behavior suits most driving; disable it only if you prefer to watch the ranch while cruising
Automatic Camera Recentering Latency0.5 sControls how quickly the camera realigns — lower value = faster recentering. The official notes say this setting helps with motion sicknessIf the game makes you queasy, this is the first slider to experiment with — see motion sickness below
Auto Reset Camera ZoomDisabledWhen enabled, zoom adjusts automatically depending on context; when disabled, zoom remains stable while drivingKeep it off (the default) for a stable frame while driving; enable it only if you want automatic zoom changes between contexts

Building controls

Official (Feb 2026 update, demo-era); recheck against the current EA build. Two options were added for builders:

The same update added clearer error messages when placing blueprints — for unpurchased farm parcels, unauthorized zones or interiors, collisions or failed placement requirements, and exceeding City Hall building height limits. If placement fails, read the message before assuming a bug; see the Building & Placement Guide and the roof quest troubleshooting page for the most common blockers.

Controls FAQ

How do I rotate the camera in The Ranchers?

Hold the Right Mouse Button, per the official control simplification update (Feb 2026, demo-era — recheck against the current EA build). All primary tool actions moved to the Left Mouse Button at the same time.

Where are the camera settings?

Open the menu with ESC — Game Settings are accessible directly from the ESC menu — and look for the dedicated Camera Settings section added in the Feb 2026 update (demo-era; recheck against the current EA build).

Does the game pause when I open Settings?

In solo mode, yes — the official notes say the game pauses while you use the Feedback App or Settings App (Feb 2026 update, demo-era; recheck against the current EA build). Do not rely on pausing in a co-op session.

Is there QWERTZ keyboard support?

Yes — QWERTZ layout support (Germany, Austria, etc.) was added in the official Feb 2026 update (demo-era; recheck against the current EA build).

The camera keeps swinging back while I drive. Can I stop it?

That is Automatic Camera Recenter – In Vehicle, which is enabled by default. Disable it in Camera Settings, or raise the recentering latency (default 0.5 s) so it kicks in more slowly.
